Paul Costelloe

Paul Costelloe is one of the most established names in British fashion, his strong sense of style and desire to create fresh and wearable pieces has kept Paul Costelloe at the forefront of fashion for the past 25 years.

We caught up with the Dublin born designer to talk high street collaborations and Reese Witherspoon’s personal style.

What do you think about the fashion industry now?
It’s difficult and challenging, but with that comes great and exciting opportunities.

What are the biggest challenges you’ve been through to maintain a successful label for such a long time?
Believing in yourself and not being over-influenced with other people’s suggestions for your collection. This happens season on season and requires a great deal of courage of your convictions.

What do you think about our high street fashion?
It has become a bit same-y. Everyone plays it safe, bar Topshop. I also don’t think there is enough thought with regards to larger-sized women. There are many women larger than a size 12.

How about the popular collaborations, like Matthew Williamson for H&M?
I think they are fantastic. It gives people a taste of designers they are otherwise unable to afford and is good for the designer too – for profits as well as reaching a larger target audience.

Which shops do you think do it best?
I do think H&M do it very well; particularly the Cavalli collaboration.

What can we expect from Paul Costelloe for Spring/Summer 09?
Contemporary and classic styling side by side  with sheer and delicate fabrics.

What was the inspiration behind the collection?
Imperialism meets 21st century with traditional military.

Which trends do you think will dominate Spring/Summer 09?
Short short – if you’ve got the legs!

Favourite piece from your Spring/Summer 09 collection?
A little taupe shift dress. It’s classic and elegant.

Which of the young designers do you admire right now?
I really enjoy Gareth Pugh’s collection – he possesses a real talent and flair.

Who do you regard as real style icons, male and female?
I think personality always plays a significant role in someone’s style… I admire Reese Witherspoon because she always stays true to her personal style and isn’t swayed by trends… her personality radiates through every red carpet appearance. Male wise, Brad Pitt I think is always well groomed on the red carpet, but has an easy, laid back feel which gives an extra dimension to the look.

If you could choose anyone to play you in a movie of your life who would you choose?
Liam Neeson

Most memorable moment in your career so far?
My first visit to Kensington Palace to meet Princess Diana.

In light of the current economic climate what one piece of clothing should we buy this summer?

Polka dots. My range has a fabulous brown and cream polka dot dress which is a perfect BBQ, summer party number.

Best place to have dinner in London?
I love the Chelsea Art Club – if you’re not sober.

What’s your guilty pleasure?
I cycle to work and on the occasion I like to indulge in a cinnamon pastry and large latte.

What grooming products do you use?
Anything on the mantel piece! I am however fond of the coconut products from The Body Shop.
