My Favourite Dress

In 2003, the Zandra Rhodes Fashion and Textile Museum displayed a new kind of fashion exhibit. Normally, fashion museum exhibits select a few designer pieces that are chosen based on how representative they are of a generation or decade. The “My Favourite Dress” exhibit took a very different approach, asking over 70 designers from all over the world what their favourite dress was.
A careful effort was made by the designers to interpret the question personally. They decided whether their “favourite” was the dress that they thought was the most influential, or the one that they personally liked the best. Gity Monsef has captured the magic of the exhibit in the book “My Favourite Dress.” The book features 150 designers, photographers, and celebrities telling us their choices and reasons for their favourites.
What are our favourites?
We love Donna Karan’s choice of her 1996 delicate handmade devore dress, which was worn flawlessly by Demi Moore. No one (including designer Vera Wang herself) can forget the stunning mustard-yellow gown Michelle Williams wore at the 2006 Oscars, pairing it with red lipstick. Luella Bartley’s simple and fun 2001 cotton with car paint dress worn effortlessly by Kate Moss is also a favourite. With such fantastic images and secrets about how the dresses we love came to be, this book is an absolute must have (perhaps a little gift for yourself?). Also, for every book purchased, the Antique Collectors Club will donate 10% to Save the Children.

How fun! Books like this are good for a new perspective on the same old ideas…. nice to see personal opinions instead of professional ideas!
