New York Fashion Week Begins…

New York Fashion Week kicked off yesterday, but with a more sombre mood after the sad news of Alexander McQueen’s passing filtered through to the front rows. However the show must go on with BCBG Max Azira and Gwen Stefani’s L.A.M.B showing their collections.
Max and Lubov Azria’s kicked off the day with their Fall 2010 wearable and sophisticated collection, comprising of geometric prints and a muted palette. The duo showed floaty silks with soft draping, over laying fabrics in dove greys and black, with the odd injection of punchy mustard yellow and midnight blues. Most pieces were brought together with a waist cinching belt while models were accessorised with light grey or white opaque tights. (Hmm not easy to wear, note to self!)
In contrast Gwen Stefani showed a military, modern collection inspired by a real eclectic range of “vintage, boudoir, military, fifties, sexy, and futuristic.” As can be expected from the military vibe, the palette consisted of khakis, black and grey with cargo trousers and skin tight jeans. Stefani also showed a range of jackets from parkas to biker jackets and a chic hounds tooth wrap coat. Leather featured heavily in the collection whether it be corsets, skirts or woven into tops, adding a little punk into the mix. Belts were snaked around the models bodies over loose fitting jerseys, echoing the military vibe. On the beauty side of things deep crimson lips, porcelain powdered skin and intensely smoked eyes mirrored the ‘vintage’ and ‘fifties’ themes as cited by Stefani as inspiration, resulting in models looking like a grungy 50′s Hollywood starlet.
