Donna Karan Spring/Summer 2010

Donna Karan Spring/Summer 2010

Donna Karan
Quoting the muse of her collection this spring Donna Karan says she was “inspired by the power of the elements,” mostly, from the look of her collection, the wind. She presents another beautiful and wearable collection for Spring 2010. The colour palette remains true to all the trends for next spring with neutrals, soft pinks and blues, and a couple of bold red dresses.

Some of the pieces look as if the model just encountered a stiff breeze before she got onto the runway. The clothes are crafted to mould around her body perfectly. The look created is one of effortless chic and femininity, not always easily achieved but Donna Karan pulls it off.

Karan’s dresses twisted around the model’s bodies in a weightless fashion, as if the dress had just fallen over the model’s frame. Karan broke up the neutrals with a few red pieces that called for attention. Especially in displaying her folded envelope dress, with trendy pockets, providing the audience the perfect opportunity to view a remarkable coral belt from Gerda Monies. Along with the other accessories Karan included in her show were Stephen Jones hats that matched well with the wind blown effect of the dresses, but perhaps on their own look a bit deflated.

Thakoon Panichgul S/S collection

Thakoon
Thakoon Panichgul may not be on top of the list for the must-see of fashion week, but this young, new designer has come into the spotlight. Not only is he a favourite pick for Michelle Obama, on more than one occasion, he also made a special appearance in The September Issue.

His spring line-up included many print dresses, which have become his signature. “I wanted to evoke loose and tight together,” Panichgul explained, “sometimes in one silhouette.” This look was successfully achieved in more than one dress, with body hugging moulds and loose sleeves. One thing that Thakoon doesn’t shy away from is colour.  His collection is thriving with deep azures, burnt orange, turquoise, pink, and green.

Vera Wang's 'Tough Elegance' Collection

Vera Wang's 'Tough Elegance' Collection

Vera Wang
The best way to illustrate Vera Wang’s new collection is tough elegance. Still sticking to her favourite colour of black with touches of plum and off-white, she also steers clear of structure with slouched trousers and trapeze dresses. Her pieces reflect a lot of draping over her models. Her collection this season is much more casual than her previous one, with a subtlety of East-meets-West and a French touch.

Although this season Wang tried to toughen up her usual romantic vision, this isn’t to say that she stayed completely in the casual trend. She ended the collection with a series of long and short dresses made out of sheer black. One in particular that stands out is a one-shoulder ballerina-style, mesh cocktail dress.
