No doubt the first thing that springs to mind when you think of designer Olivia Rubin is the speech bubble. And so her current collaboration with Gigaset, the home phone specialists sits perfectly as they attempt to bring back the art of conversation. . .

Who are your design influences? 

I refer a lot to modern art and keep up to date with current exhibitions and gallery events. I like juxtaposing this against natural elements such as florals, animal prints and my signature brick.

What’s the toughest part of being a designer?

I find the creative element comes naturally to me and is the part I love. However there are a lot of logistic s involved in running a business and I probably least look forward to parts of this side of being a designer and a business owner.

How important to the brand are collaborations with high-street retailers – such as Dorothy Perkins and ASOS?

I’ve been involved in collaborations since the start of my label. I find it’s a great way of broadening the audience of the brand and appealing to a lower levelled market. I also enjoy the creative side of working with new people especially a big high street retailer as they work very differently to me-I learnt a lot from all my experiences and want to continue to explore these avenues.

Are there any other retailers in particular you’d like to work with? 

I’m currently working on some projects outside the fashion realm which is a new but exciting path for me. I won’t give too much away at the moment but I hope people will be appreciating Olivia Rubin prints in their homes in the near future ;)

You are known for your signature prints – particularly the speech bubbles and brickwork – are you working to move away from this or will these always be integral to the brand? 

Having a signature such as the brick is a strong recognition point for the brand. Customers keep wanting more of it and know that they are investment pieces as I reinvent the brick in a various colour ways and styles each season. The brick is an iconic symbolism of the brand-strong, graphic and resilient with a light hearted edge.

How would you describe your personal style?

Chic, feminine with a quirky edge.

Who do you design the Olivia Rubin brand for? Is there a particular type of girl you have in mind?

I definitely design clothes that I want to wear but I take into consideration the different ages, sizes and shapes of customers that but my collections and try to appeal to them by combining the right silhouette with the right print. Although I want the prints to do the talking ultimately I want my collections to flatter too.

What’s on your summer wish list?

Bright casual basics that you can mix and match, an investment summer coat, printed scarves (you can never have to many!) and a big neutral tote for some classic arm candy.

What do you treasure most in your wardrobe?

I am a bit of a hoarder so I tend to go through phases of loving certain items and then moving onto something fresh. At the moment I am becoming a bit of a trainer fanatic-lots of fluro pairs and gracing my everyday wardrobe. I’m also partial to a blazer or cropped jacket and a printed t-shirt.

Whose wardrobe would you most like to switch with? 

An easy one-my mum! Full of classic Chanel-it’s off limits to me unless I manage to sneak in without her noticing!

Where do you never leave empty handed? 

Selfridges!

Is there anyone in particular you’d love to dress?

Kate Middleton! A royal in brick print-need I say more!

Could you share your best piece of fashion/ style advice?

Don’t over-think your style and it will come naturally. Dress  for your mood, your figure and the season
