With the news that you can now borrow Freida Pinto’s pale yellow Burberry Prorsum dress or Dita Von Tease’s evening dress courtesy of Topshop, we now hear that you could own an iconic piece of Audrey Hepburn’s wardrobe for a cool £1000. Treasured pieces worn by the late star are set to be auctioned by Kerry Taylor Auctions, on the 8th of December as part of its Passion for Fashion Sale.

Three years ago the iconic little black Givenchy dress immortalised by Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s was sold for a staggering £467,000 at auction. So we can probably expect many of the pieces to fetch a pretty price. The items belong to Tanja Star-Busmann, a good friend of Hepburn’s, the pair were incidentally neighbours in Mayfair when Hepburn was in her twenties. Tanja would write to Audrey from boarding school and Audrey would give her the lowdown on life on Broadway. When Hepburn secured her role in Gigi she restructured her wardrobe giving much of it to Tanja. Hepburn continued to send Tanja more and more of her clothes as her career began to grow. Tanja explains “Over the years, a cavalcade of boxes filled to the brim with haute couture gowns and divine little cocktail ensembles arrived at my door. Unpacking them was always like Christmas, a thousand times over.”

Tanja has decided to auction 48 pieces which even includes Hepburn’s wedding dress. The ivory gown was designed by the Fontana sisters in Italy for Hepburn’s proposed marriage to James Hanson in 1952, the wedding never actually happened. Pieces also include Givenchy dresses worn by Hepburn in Love in the Afternoon (1957), it could be yours but has a reserve of £2,000 to £3,000. There’s also a beautiful LBD as worn by Hepburn in Paris When it Sizzles (1962.)

The auction takes place on December 8, 2pm, at La Galleria, Royal Opera Arcade, Pall Mall, London. For those of you toying with the possibility of bidding for a piece of Hepburn’s wardrobe, 50% of the proceeds from the sale will be donated to the Audrey Hepburn Children’s Fund.

As Sean Hepburn Ferrer, (Hepburn’s son) said ‘take good care of your clothes, because they are the first impression of you.’ We’re certainly glad Tanja did.
