Rodarte Sisters

Rodarte Sisters

Sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavy founded their clothing line Rodarte, which is named after their mother’s maiden name, in 2005. The pair graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 2001.  Upon graduation, the duo moved home to Pasadena, California where they began creating their line. After hand-finishing just a few coats and dresses, Kate and Laura went to New York to show their collection to anyone that was interested. After receiving a warm response, the two went back to Pasadena, completed the collection and returned to New York to promote it.

In 2008, Rodarte received the CFDA Swarovski Emerging Womenswear Designer award and the Swiss Textiles Award. Rodarte also received attention from Christian Louboutin, who designed shoes for the line in 2008. Rodarte established itself in the fashion world by remaining truly dedicated to designing haute couture pieces. The amount of detail put into each piece is extraordinary, as is demonstrated in their devotion to movement and texture while maintaining an extraordinary lightness. The pair has said that their work is “often a study of balance, in which volume, construction, and color have a complex interplay that we carefully control.” Still highly influential, the Spring 2010 show drew viewers like Kirsten Dunst and Rachel Zoe.

To date, the ethereal line is carried internationally in over 40 top stores like Harvey Nichols, Colette, and Bergdorf Goodman. Dita Von Teese, Natalie Portman, Chloe Sevigny, and Michelle Obama are all fans of the line.
