Uniqlo is getting the designer touch, we hear that German designer Jil Sander is on the brink of signing a “design consulting agreement” to oversee the men’s and women’s ranges at Uniqlo.

Ever since Sander left Prada five years ago the rumour mill has been in over drive speculating where she would go, some even believed she would take on Gap. Now it seems while Jil will not have an official title at the company, she will take over the creative reins for all of Uniqlo’s products (excluding accessories and children’s wear). A source said. “It is understood the Japanese brand and Sander are also working to develop a special Uniqlo collection, bearing the designer’s minimalist look, set to bow for the fall season.”

As we know Uniqlo are no strangers to a designer collaboration of such. In the past they have worked alongside the likes of Phillip Lim, Alexander Wang and Alice Roi for their Designers Invitation Project, but this is the first time they have established a long term relationship with a brand name. It is no surprise these two have come together considering they are so likeminded, both Sander and Uniqlo have always put a strong emphasis on fabric innovation in its products, like Uniqlo’s machine-washable sweaters, which actually keep their shape after being washed rather than retreating and shrinking to a child sized version.

While most of our high street favourites have taken a major blow from the recession Uniqlo has actually thrived. Their affordable line up of fashion basics has resulted in a growth of sales, their February sales were up 4.2%. We look forward to seeing what the duo come up with, so watch this space.
