Never one to shy away from making a political statement, Vivienne Westwood did just that in her Red Label show Sunday night at the Red Bull Fashion Factory. As her clothes portrayed a sunny British summer, there was a back statement about the destruction of rain forests and the irony that if something isn’t done quickly we’ll no longer have these pleasant summers. Although the collection wasn’t particularly groundbreaking, the message and the design were quite clear: it was an ode to British fashion and the summer.

We got the opportunity to be front and center for the show and it definitely didn’t disappoint. The queen of punk steered clear of her usual style, but she did put a twist on summer’s ideal clothes with a forties-style, exaggerated tailoring including diaper shorts, argyle-patterned shorts, and drop-crotch linen pants. There were a few pieces that were very feminine and sexy: high-waisted grey trousers paired with a romantic lavender top, a shoulder barring polka dot dress, and a white and blue pinstriped dress.

The Red Bull Fashion Factory was packed full of famous faces including Boy George, Alexa Chung, Girls Aloud stars Sarah Harding and Nicola Roberts, Joss Stone, and former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell. But this didn’t include the stars that walked the runway, among them were Daisy Lowe and Pixie Geldof .

To emphasize her desire to save the environment, Vivienne Westwood wore a bright green dress, her signature orange hair and bright red lipstick.

“Some people may find it odd that I put politics into my fashion shows, but I couldn’t just do fashion if I didn’t have something else to occupy me,” Westwood said after the show. “I need something that is intellectually stimulating, and I think it’s criminal that we are not treating this environmental catastrophe with the urgency it needs. We’re destroying the planet.”
