Festival must-haves

Festivals and beauty editors (or at least this beauty ed) should not mix. It may only be for a couple of days, yet the lack of running water, mirrors and space for ritualistic skincare regimes deems the whole tent-in-a-field fun somewhat hard to swallow and makes any chance of looking good (Alessandra Ambrosio aside) nigh on impossible.

Sadler’s Wells is presenting a two week dance festival called Sadler’s Sampled, with the slogan ‘Free Your Mind’ as this years theme.

The UK’s leading dance house, Sadler’s Wells, is hosting the event and is giving the festival goer’s the chance to experience dance in a whole new and interactive way. The tickets start at just £8 and let you try out a variety of dance styles, as well as watch showcases from some of the leading dance productions, such as a contemporary dance from ‘Rosas’, hip-hop, ballet, and tango from ‘Sampled’, and Hofesh Schechter’s production ‘Political Mother: The Choreographer’s Cut.’

The festival will also feature talks, classes, and films as well. Highlighted events from the festival include an interactive art instillation by Sophia Clist, screenings of award-winning short films from ‘idill’, the international dance online short-film festival, and dance classes in the styles of tango, break-dancing and more.

The two week dance festival is a great way to experience dance in an interactive and new way. The festival lasts from 22 June until 7 July. Tickets start at £8 at and can be bought here.

amfAR gala: The Ultimate Gold Collection Fashion Show

Last night as the sea shimmered off the stunning Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Cannes, the high priestess of fashion Carine Roitfeld hosted the annual amfAR gala. A model army featuring Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Karlie Kloss, Alessandra Ambrosio, Liberty Ross, Karolina Kurkova and Joan Smalls hit the French Riviera and the catwalk, for The Ultimate Gold Collection Fashion Show – a tribute to the late Elizabeth Taylor, representing “warmth, love and success,” says Roitfeld.

To choose the leading ladies, Forbes selected over 250 candidates from seven categories; billionaires, business, lifestyle, media, nonprofits and NGO’s, politics, and technology. From these categories, rank was determined based on money, media presence ,and impact.

Leading the list this year is Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor since 2005 and also the first woman to hold the position. This is the seventh time she has topped the Forbes list for Most Powerful Women in the World in the last ten years. Other leading ladies include Michelle Obama, who snagged the number four spot on the list, right behind Melinda Gates.

Forbes regulars on the list include Oprah Winfrey (no. 13), Hillary Clinton (no. 5), J.K. Rowling (no. 97), and Queen Elizabeth II (no. 40). Notable newcomers to the list are fashion designer Tory Burch and Sara Blakely, the founder of Spanx. These two are also the youngest women who are self-made billionaires. Does it surprise you that Beyonce ranked higher than the Queen on this year’s list? Beyonce came in at number 17, only three spots behind Oprah. Angelina Jolie (no. 37) had a busy year, filming the high-budget film, ‘Malificent’ and also worked as a UN Goodwill Ambassador. ‘Modern Family’ actress Sofia Vergara (no. 38) followed right behind Angelina Jolie. She snagged endorsement deals from Pepsi and Covergirl and behind-the-scenes, she is also the cofounder of the talent management and media company, Latin WE. Singing ladies that topped the list as well are Lady Gaga (no. 45) and Shakira (no. 52).

Ladies in Fashion

Editor-in-chief of ‘Vogue’, Anna Wintour came in at the respectable #41 this year, right behind Queen Elizabeth II. She’s held the editor-in-chief title for twenty-five years, so there is no doubt that she is one of the most influential voices in the fashion industry. Designer Miuccia Prada came in as #58. Gisele Bundchen (no. 95) and Diane Von Furstenberg (no. 74) also made this year’s list. However, the most notable fashion figure to make the list has to go to Tory Burch (no. 69). The fashion mogul is the creator of the famous $200 ballet flat that have been flying off the shelves, and this year, she became the second youngest self-made female billionaire in America.

Philanthropists Changing the World

These ladies are the leaders of major nonprofits and NGOs and are responsible for helping out countless peeple around the world through their philanthropic actions. The leading one is Melinda Gates (no. 3) who set the goal to eradicate polio by 2018. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation as also donated $140 million annually to help get contraceptives to 120 million women by 2020. Margaret Chan (no. 33) moved up two spots on the list this year and is the leader of the World Health Organization and has influence on the drugs and treatments used in countries fighting diseases like AIDS and malaria.

She’s usually so off-beat, so non-conformist, so well, erm, street! And that’s why we love her (honest, it’s not just about the brows). But this week, Cara has been flaunting a couple of additions to her model-body that have made us scratch our heads.

First up the bushy-browed Brit model showcased this fine beast  - the beautifully shaded handy work of New York tattoo artist Bang Bang on the index finger of her left hand.

 And then just a couple of days later, Cara tweeted pics of a second tattoo inked along the side of the same hand of her initials CJD.

As someone who has fallen prey to the lure of the tattoo artists chair on more than one occasion, and then forked out for the pain of laser removal, I’d suggest that as beautiful and fun as Cara’s tattoos are, before you head off to have that Giraffe head etched across your arm (ok, maybe that is taking it a little too far), I’d think long and hard about what you’d like stamped on your skin – and the symbolism and sentiment that will go along with it. Not to mention how you’ll feel when you’re an 80 year old grandma sporting ink on the beach. . hmm not so cool anymore hey?
