Bastille Day

Celebrate Bastille Day with Chez Gerard

14th July is a big deal in France as it’s Bastille Day (the French national holiday which celebrates the beginning of the French Revolution) and to celebrate the Chez Gerard chain of restaurants have specially designed a menu running until 22nd July 2011.

The menu itself is simple but epitomises everything that I would want if someone took me out to dinner in Paris – assuming I was wearing a forgiving dress… Terrine de foie gras (foie gras pâté) to start, Filet (fillet steak with chips) for main, Crème Brûlèe for dessert and Les fromages (a cheese plate) and coffee for after.

Now although it’s not quite Paris, I popped down to the Charlotte Street restaurant with a colleague on Friday lunchtime to sample the menu and we were really impressed. My colleague had already been raving about the steaks at Chez Gerard, so I was happy to find they made their way onto the menu and was excited to see what the rest of the food was like.

We opted for a 3 course version (£29) rather than the 4 course with cheese (£35) and hence started with the Foie Gras. The terrine, although slightly too chilled for my liking, was very creamy and delicious, served with toasted brioche and a lovely fig chutney. We then moved onto our steaks which were succulent and very tasty. We had pepper and béarnaise sauce to accompany each dish and although the former had a real kick, it was delicious nonetheless and the béarnaise, by my colleague’s account, was great as well. By this point both of us has completely cleared our plates and filled our stomachs, however out came the Crème Brûlèe and we simply couldn’t resist. The creamy dessert was the perfect temperature with an amazing crispy top that complimented the smooth inner texture perfectly.

I’d definitely recommend heading down to Chez Gerard while this offer is still on (you have until 22nd July) as it’s great value for money considering how amazing the steak is and the restaurants themselves are really very nice as well and dotted all over London so you’re bound to find somewhere close.
