The Gay Hussar

The Gay Hussar

By John Gregory Smith

The Gay Hussar is a very old school Soho establishment, located on Greek Street, which has been serving hearty Hungarian food since 1953.

The place is quite eccentric, laid out over three floors of a narrow Soho townhouse, with the walls adorned with caricatures of the many influential diners.

They serve really delicious traditional Hungarian food that you won’t find anywhere else in London: starters of Chilled Wild Cherry Soup; Fish Dumplings in Creamy Dill and Mushroom Sauce; Beef Goulash Soup; Smoked Hungarian Sausage; or marinated Fillet of Herring with Soured Cream; main courses of Smoked Breast of Goose with Scholet and Red Cabbage; Veal Goulash with Galuska; Stuffed Cabbage with Minced Pork, Sauerkraut, Sausage and Bacon; Duck Livers sautéed with Onion, Bacon and Paprika; Veal Wiener Schnitzel with Sauté Potatoes and Pepper Salad. Desserts are similarly out of the ordinary from the creamy Layered Gateau, Dobos Torta to Poppy Seed Strudel with Vanilla Ice Cream and Chestnut Purée.

A Lunchtime menu is available at £18.50 for two courses and £21.50 for three.
