Bobbi Brown SPF 15 Tinted Moisturizer Oil Free

This Deputy Editor’s favourite tinted moisturiser for the summer. It’s light but has enough weight to it for anyone that likes to feel like they actually have something on.

It’s really hydrating but not oily and it gives great coverage with SPF. Good enough in fact, that you’d only need this with you on holiday rather than a foundation for the evening as well, especially with the slightly yellow undertones in the Fair/Medium shade which give a great glow for slightly pinker skin tones when teamed with a fab bronzer and peachy blush.

It’s not cheap but it’s 100% worth it as it really does last all day.

Estee Lauder Daywear Sheer Tint Release Advanced Multi-Protection Anti-Oxidant Moisturizer SPF15

This is our Editor’s favourite pick this week. It smells divine (think fresh cucumbers) and literally melts into your face, leaving you with a fab dewy complexion and really hydrated skin. Also great to use as a foundation to take on holiday.

This is the one for you if you love great coverage but don’t like foundation as you can barely feel it on.

Urban Decay Urban Defence Tinted Moisturiser Bulletproof

This is the cheaper alternative to all these luxy tints. The Urban Defense is a great creamy tinted moisturiser and is the perfect product for anyone wanting to hold on to that summer colour a bit longer after a holiday. The pigments are very good and keep you looking healthy all day long.

It’s not the lightest of the bunch but it’s definitely worth a try if you’re a colour lover.

Clinique City Block Sheer SPF 25

This is another of our team’s favourites as it is super light (you can barely notice you have it on) but doesn’t cut corners when it comes to protection with a formula with SPF 25.

It’s the best complement to a busy city lifestyle and long sweaty commutes on the tube as it doesn’t budge, but keeps your skin protected from all the nasties in a city atmosphere.

MAC Studio Moisture Tint

This is a great staple in any beauty lover’s makeup bag. The tube is thin and perfect for a handbag/evening clutch and the formula is easy to wear and gives a great fresh faced glow for a day on the beach, or if you’re unlucky, an important business meeting!

We love to mix it in with our favourite day moisturisers to give our skin that extra added boost of hydration for the hot summer season.

Battle stations ready!

Tonight’s the night! If you’re anything like us you’ve had your New Year’s Eve outfit and makeup planned days in advance but here are a few quick beauty tips to make sure you’re looking your best for the photos and midnight kisses!

No SPF. Avoid any moisturisers or foundations that contain SPF as they’ll reflect light under flash and make your face look paler than the rest of your body in photos. We recommend something like Shu Uemura Face Architect for a light, flawless base.

Amp up the colour. Wear a tiny bit more blush and bronzer than you usually would to ensure you don’t look washed-out in pictures. Don’t take it to clown levels though, a thin extra layer should do the trick! NARS Angelika blush looks stunning applied with a light hand.

Glow, don’t sparkle. It’s easy to go a bit OTT with the glitter on New Years Eve but try to apply any shimmery products with a light hand otherwise you’ll look less glowy and more like you’ve rolled in a vat of oil – especially in photos. Lorac Luminizing Powder in Perfectly Lit is perfect for a subtle glow.

Prepped locks are a must for NYE, less product means they won't look greasy!

Set it. Set your makeup to ensure it lasts through the night and doesn’t run. Go waterproof wherever possible and remember to set your foundation with powder and your eyeliner with an eyeshadow in a matching colour. Make sure to prime your lids for eyeshadow too – we love Urban Decay Primer Potion for that, they also do an amazing makeup setting spray.

Bronze it up! A light dusting of bronzer can slim down the post-Christmas bloat wonderfully. Don’t just do your face, a little down your legs (concentrating on the shins), your arms, clavicle, cleavage and shoulders will define the contours of your body. An old classic, NARS Laguna is your best bet for glowy, non-orange bronze.

Prep your skin. Face masks are a fab way to brighten up the skin before applying your makeup, throw one on post-shower for the best results. We’re loving the Dr. Brandt Detoxygen Mask for a quick pick-me-up.

Prep your hair. Throw on a hair mask pre styling-session to ensure your style looks glossy and put together without having to pile on the product. Frederic Fekkai does a fab nourishing mask.

Handbag essentials? Blotting papers, your lip products, a trial-size perfume, powder for touch-ups, a comb and a mini can of hairspray.

Keep those tips in mind and you’ll be looking beyond fabulous tonight – have fun, be safe and have a Happy New Year from all of us at Beauty and the Dirt!

Amanda Seyfried

Amanda Seyfried has been doing the rounds recently. Since ‘Mamma Mia!’ she’s featured in a number of films including ‘Chloe’ and the upcoming ‘Dear John’, alongside Channing Tatum (out 14th April) and ‘Letters to Juliet’, alongside Vanessa Redgrave.

We love her cute, baby faced charm but love it even more when she vamps it up for the red carpet. If you’d like to get the Amanda Seyfried ‘look’ then read on to find out how.

Face – Flawless and Fresh

Not one to really slap it on, Amanda tends to stick with minimal face make-up. You could probably even get away with a good tinted moisturiser (such as Laura Mercier or Olay Complete Care Touch of Foundation). The must here is that after you’ve got a flawless base, pop a cool toned blusher on the apples of your cheeks. I’d recommend MAC’s Mineralise SkinFinish in Blonde as its got a great palette combination, plus it’s pearlised so you can use some of the tones as highlighters for your brow and cheeks bones.

Eyes – Kitten Cute

Amanda has quite feline eyes anyway but this look really accentuates their shape. Start by shading in the crease of the eye with a grey/taupe shadow and then take a darker grey/black shadow to the outer corner and a paler cream shadow around the tear duct. Make sure you’ve got a great blending brush such as the MAC Tapered Blending Brush and give the whole lid a dust over to ensure the shadow blends well.

Having blended, now add the feline flick along the upper lid line. The best way to do this is by closing one eye, raising your eyebrow and slightly pulling you eyebrow towards your hairline so that the skin is taught. For the flick use a black eye pencil, such as Bourjois Kohl and Contour, and with the skin taught, draw a dense line across 2/3rds of your lash line. Then take an angle eye-liner brush and smudge the line appropriately, taking it into a flick at the outer corner.

With the colour in place, then apply the false eyelashes. I personally swear by individual adhesive lashes (such as the one’s from Eyelure) however if they’re too much for you, go for some high impact one’s like those in the Girl’s Aloud for Eyelure range.

Lips – Plump and Pretty

She’s gone for a really simple, glossy look for her lips. To achieve this look go for a plumping, rosy gloss such as the L’Oreal 6h Glam Shine Volumizer in Addictive Peach (no.110).

So there you go, you’re just a few steps away from looking like the ‘Dear John’ star. If only it was that easy to get to smooch on screen with the gorgeous Channing Tatum!

Taylor Swift's signature sparkling look gives tired eyes a wake up

Lively, sparkling eyes are Taylor Swift’s signature look so copy this A lister and give tired eyes an instant lift by adding sparkle. According to make-up artist Lizzie Court, shimmering make up instantly refreshes your look. “Dab a touch of shimmer cream in the hollow of your eyes in the inner corners using a cotton bud to blend. Darker skin tones should go for a warm golden colour such as BECCA Shimmering Skin Perfector in Gold (£32.70 available from Beauty Expert). Paler skin tones should opt for silvery shades or a pearlescent hue, such as Maybelline’s Dream Mousse Shimmer in Porcelain (£5.99)”. To really give tired eyes a real wake-up try sparkle eye drops, Optrex Eyedew really does brighten blurry eyes (£4.49 available at Boots.com).

Clinique’s High Impact Mascara

Hollywood Style
Try an old Hollywood trick for bright eyes; Lizzie Court says, “Use a nude coloured eye pencil to line the inside rim of your lower lid. This will mask any redness and brighten eyes instantly. Try Mac’s Eye Kohl Pencil (£12.50).”  Invest in a mascara that really separates and defines each lash, such as Clinique’s High Impact Mascara (£14.50) which will give eyes a more open appearance.

Laura Mecier’s Crème Cheek Colour

Fresh Flush
Make sure you dab your cheeks with a popping crème blush, and your whole face will look instantly awake! A light layer of cream blush will melt on to skin and appear to look natural rather than layering a pastel shade. Try Laura Mecier’s Crème Cheek Colour, to apply Lizzie suggests “using your fingers lightly rub the cream blush on the highest point of the apples of your cheek. This will create a transparent flush like when you pinch your cheeks.”

Julianne Moore in A Single Man

Tom Ford’s debut feature A Single Man looks set to be a hit, with superb casting and a wardrobe that sees even the maid looking stylish and chic, well what else did you expect? Julianne Moore takes on the female lead in the film, set in California in the 60′s.  Beehives and heavy flicked black liner set against porcelain skin were make up trends of the time. This is probably what Winehouse sees when she tries to focus in the mirror.

Here’s some products we recommend to get the look:

Get the Julianne Moore look

Start with the base, here Julianne’s skin looks very natural with her freckles still visible, try a tinted moisturiser such as MAC’s Studio Moisture Tint SPF 15. Then set with some loose power for a matte finish such as Clinique’s Superbalanced Powder.

For the eyes start by using a pale shadow across the lid, if you are more confident, blend a slightly darker shade in the socket. L’Oréal Paris Colour Appeal Trio Pro Eye Shadow is good for this.

Next line the top of the lid winging it out at the end, use Rimmel’s  Exaggerate Eye Liner. If your hand is a little unsteady rest your elbow on a hard surface. Then line under the eyes using Bobbi Brown’s Creamy Pencil in charcoal blend with the inbuilt smudger.

Layer the lashes with Max Factor False Lash Effect Mascara or go for it with some false lashes, we like Eylure.

Use a soft blush on the cheeks like Becca’s Lip and Cheek Cream in Petal, cheeks are not the main feature here, it’s all about full on eyes and nude lips.

Finish off by coating the lips in a natural lipstick, try Revlon’s Matte lipstick Nude Attitude, no gloss.

Zooey Deschanel

Zooey Deschanel stars as Summer Finn in the hit rom com (500) Days of Summer. We loved her quirky style in the film and fresh faced approach to make-up so we asked our regular celeb make-up artist Lizzie Court for some top tips on how to recreate Zooey’s signature style. “Zooey’s look is barely there beauty with matte, very pretty, pale skin and a hint of rosy cheeks finished off with fluttering eyelashes.”  The look was also seen on the runway at Moschino Cheap & Chic, make-up artist Sam Bryant labelled the look as “super pretty, rosy pink girls on acid.” Lizzie suggests “priming skin with a good moisturiser.” This will give skin the perfect base on which to apply foundation. Try Estee Lauder’s Hydra Complete, it’s an instant skin brightener and keeps dry skin hydrated.

1. Using a damp sponge apply foundation, we like Max Factor’s Second Skin for light breathable coverage. Start from the centre of your face working out to avoid lines under the chin and blend well.

2. To mask tired eyes apply concealer under eyes. Lizzie suggests opting for a shade that’s one or two shades lighter and blend with a brush or fingers but try not to over blend.

3. Set the look with a pressed powder, keep it matte by “rolling” the powder over your face. Start in the centre and work out. Try MAC’s  Mineralize Skinfinish/Natural for a finish to foundation.

4. For the eyes begin by applying a dark black/grey eye shadow try L’Oreal’s Colour Appeal Trio Pro in Grey Obsession. Lizzie explains “apply to the top of the eyelids with a flat brush and blend up to the eye socket. If there are any mistakes use a cotton bud dipped in a non greasy eye make-up remover for a quick fix.”

5. Next apply a black liquid or pencil line to the top of the lashes winging it slightly at the end. If you’re hand isn’t very steady I’d suggest using a pencil for easy application. My particular favourite is the Kohl Power Eye Pencil by MAC.

6. To get Zooey’s spidery eyelash effect I’d suggest investing in false eyelashes. Eylure do a fantastic selection. Apply them using tweezers to the edge of the eye.

7. Zooey’s fresh flushed look can be obtained by applying a lovely ‘strawberry pink’ blush. Apply using a large brush and sweep across the apple of your cheeks, try using NARS Orgasm.

8. Lips are filled with a natural pink lipstick which is patted down to look like a stain, try Estee Lauder’s Pure Colour Gloss stick in Sunlit Coral,  It’s the perfect combination of gloss and lipstick but with just the right amount of gloss so lips aren’t left dry.

Get Christina Aguilera's Golden Globe Look

Christina looked amazing at the Globes, in her strapless Versace dress and check out those Stephen Webster diamonds.  Her look was achieved using NARS cosmetics, her make up artists Kristofer Buckle shares his tips and tricks on how he got the look.

“I wanted to create a soft natural look on Christina to compliment her gown and new haircut,” said Kristofer Buckle for NARS Cosmetics. “Her dress choice was a beautiful pastel peach with silver. I didn’t want the look to fight with her gown. The final look is chic and seamless, with a earthy colored smokey eye and glowing skin.”

Complexion:  Use the Balancing Moisture Lotion and apply the Makeup Primer as a base.  Apply Firming Foundation and set with Pressed Powder.

Eyes: Apply the vanilla side of India Song Duo Eyeshadow as a base, over the entire lid and up to eyebrow.  Next, use the shimmering walnut shade of India Song Duo Eyeshadow and apply to the outer corner and under the bottom lash line.  Then, use the warm rich brown side of Cordura Duo Eyeshadow just under eye rubbing into the lower lash line to create smokey eye.  Curl the eyelashes and apply a coat of Larger Than Life Lengthening Mascara to top and bottom lashes, following with 2 coats of Larger Than Life Volumizing Mascara for full lashes. Take Nuits Blanches Eyeliner Stylo and dot in between individual lashes [Kristofer’s tip: “I used the Push Eyeliner Brush to blend the eyeliner in between the lashes, which helped to apply just enough without looking to heavy.”]

Lips: Use the Fantasia Lipliner Pencil and Niagara Lipstick.  Next, apply Easy Lover Lip Gloss (NEW for Spring 2010) over.  [Kristofer’s tip:“Applying a sheer pink gloss on top of a nude colored lip provides a nice modern pop of color.”]

Cheeks: Generously apply Orgasm Illuminator (NEW for Spring 2010) to cheekbones, décolletage, and shoulders for an all over glow.  Use Malaysia Multiple Bronzer to contour cheeks by blending under cheekbones.  Apply the Mata Hari Blush to the apple of cheeks and lightly tap on browbone. [Kristoper’s tip: “Lightly dusting a blush on the browbone gives life to the eye and melds the whole look together.”]  Next, with short, back and forth quick strokes use Nico Blush to highlight cheekbones.
