Gran Canaria – A Place to Transform Yourself Part 2

For the most stylish and secluded experience, I highly recommend the mountainside Sheraton Salobre Golf Resort and Spa, which has an idyllic location practically remote from the outside world. Golf resorts are not usually known for being chic, but it’s surprisingly stylish, mostly due to the sleek architecture and excellent design features from the Arizona architects. Surrounded by cacti, stone and wood furnishings, you really feel transported to the mid-western desert. This place is big, but doesn’t feel it, as it’s built into a hillside, so around every corner and on every level, you uncover another pool, or another designer sun terrace. The piece de résistance is lying on a day bed by the mountaintop pool looking out over the horizon – feeling completely at one with nature. The ESPA spa on the lower levels is also a treat with Elle Decoration inspired features and luxurious treatments.

These are some of my favourites, but there are many other options with character – the 5* Palm Beach at Maspolomas is a member of Design Hotels with a quirky modern 70s retro style, designed by Alberto Pinto.  For all out luxury, try the 5* deluxe Grand Hotel Residencia, a member of the Leading Small Hotels of the World. It has a Spanish Colonial style nestled in tropical gardens and is a favourite of Orlando Bloom. All hotels here are on a grand scale, so if you prefer a boutique experience, Gran Canaria might not be for you.

Medical Tourism – the facts
If you want a transformation running deeper than spa treatments, Gran Canaria has become a popular destination for medical travel. It has a number of excellent private medical facilities, along with all the great hotels I’ve listed nearby in which to recuperate after your surgery, making it an ideal destination for anyone looking to combine surgery with a holiday.

I didn’t understand at first why people would travel abroad for surgery. But having now seen the services and amenities first-hand, I have even started wondering myself what to have done! The most popular benefit is that the cost of treatment is up to 40% less than in the UK (even with the current Euro exchange rate). There are no waiting lists and superbugs are virtually non-existent, with the most recent technology and equipment in every department. The process is surprisingly quick and simple – you can quite easily book from the UK and be seen one week later. All types of surgery are available, from cosmetic treatments through to orthopaedic surgery (e.g. joint replacements) and aesthetic treatments (e.g. hair implants, tattoo removal, varicosis surgery etc). There are also leading dental and ophthalmological clinics too, with the most pioneering technology in Europe. For a full range of information, go to Medical Travel, Eurocanarias Oftalmologica (Eye Clinic) and Branemark Centre (Dental Clinic). The Gran Canaria Wellness Association website is also a useful starting point.

What else to do?
So you’ve had your thalasso experience, you’ve lain by the pool and you may even have recuperated from a medical treatment. Is there anything else on offer? Well yes actually. The whole island seems a paradise to unwind, thanks to the volcanic sediments. Every location provides beautiful golden sandy beaches where you can swim in warm water full of iodine, sodium and other natural elements good for the body and mind. The capital, Las Palmas, is worth a visit for a day of sightseeing and shopping – make sure you buy some Aloe Vera products whilst here – it is native to the island and well known for its healing properties. It’s a great souvenir to carry on pampering yourself when back at home.
