A Blond Uniform

New York City is known for its swanky rooftop bars and secret member’s-only clubs, and The Kimberly Hotel recently launched their venture into the chic party-going scene. The property just opened their new rooftop bar, titled none other than “Upstairs”. This 4,000 square foot bar will be open year-round with a retractable glass roof and heated wood floors to accommodate the seasons. Interior designer Sylvia Tosun undertook the renovation and outfitted the space in black Edwardian chairs, pewter leather banquettes and “Alice in Wonderland” style chess tables.
Not only will the furniture be stylish, but the wait staff will be just as fashionable. The hotel hired design duo David and Phillipe Blond whom are typically known for creating jewel-encrusted corsets for the likes of Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Rihanna, to design the wait staff uniforms.
David Blond said the design was mostly influenced by the look of Upstairs because it has “this Gothic-luxe theme but it’s still very light and whimsical. It’s great because it’s very over-the-top, just like we are.” The duo typically takes “into consideration not only the music but also the stage set where they will be performing. We treated this the same way. We viewed the staff as performers.”
The Blonds have also been busy with some of their designs recently debuting in Sex and The City 2. After costume designer Patricia Fields saw a dress on Phillipe at his birthday party, she immediately thought it would be perfect for Samantha. “She said it was like her little double entendre since Samantha is always compared to a drag queen. So it made perfect sense.” They also got lucky when Patricia wore a pair of bedazzled jeans the duo had gifted to her, and as soon as Sarah Jessica Parker saw them she wanted a pair for herself.
“She was just like, ‘Hi, it’s Sarah! Oh my god, I love these jeans. I have to have them.’ And he was like, ‘Wait, who’s this?’ She was like, ‘It’s Sarah Jessica Parker.’ He freaked out.”
With an obviously very talented pair of designers creating designer outfits just for the wait staff, it’s pretty evident that this new rooftop bar will surely be a sight to see!
