The Marbella Club Hotel

The Marbella Club Hotel, Golf Resort & Spa transcends age and nationality. As you scan the unique surroundings, people from all walks of life are happily experiencing very different holidays; friends on an indulgent girlie getaway; mothers and daughters bonding, husbands and wives spending quality time together but one thing everyone has in common – that binds all – is membership to an exclusive and glamorous club.

Glamour is synonymous with the Mediterranean destination of Marbella but this elite club is different. It has lured countless celebrities and royalty over the years; the Onassis Family; HRH The Duke Of Windsor (formerly King Edward VIII); Princess Margaret; Audrey Hepburn; Brigitte Bardot; Tony Curtis; Omar Sharif; Liz Taylor; Meryl Streep; Sean Connery; Tom Cruise; The Spice Girls; (the list is endless!) but this resort has a lot more to offer than glamour alone. It is steeped in history, bursting with character and is an oasis from the hustle and bustle of commercialised resorts. Plus it’s in a fantastic position; the beachfront resort is just five minutes away from the hotspots of Puerto Banus and Old Town Marbella.

The Marbella Club Hotel was formerly the private residence of Prince Alfonso von Holenlohe. In 1954 the Prince decided to open his doors to the public and to this day you feel like guests at the Prince’s private estate. The reception and surrounding rooms are grand and beautifully decorated with royal and celebrity memorabilia and the enchanting resort resembles a white-washed Spanish village with 121 luxury bedrooms and suites and 14 Andalusian-style villas with their own private gardens and pools. Rooms are spacious, equipped with plasma TVs and tastefully decorated.

As well as creating sumptuous interiors, a great deal of thought has gone into the design of the gardens and this is where the Princes’ love of his hotel is reflected. Prepare to be awe-struck as you enter what can only be described as Eden. The Prince travelled the world, selecting stunning topical species from exotic locations and introducing them into his landscaped gardens, taking advantage of the unique microclimate created by the Sierra Blanca mountains. There are over five hundred rare, aromatic and vibrant coloured plants and flowers; an intoxicating cocktail of purple bougainvillea; jasmine; hibiscus, palms, orange, olive and trumpet trees. Forever the great host, I was told the green-fingered Prince planted lime trees with seeds he acquired in Mexico so that HRH The Duke of Windsor could give his martinis more zest when he stayed at the Club.
