Get The Look: Over-The-Shoulder Waves

February 11, 2013

Over the last month of awards season and across the red carpets from L.A to London, a hair trend has been making waves.

Channelling their inner Veronica Lake, stars including Isla Fisher, Jessica Alba and Jennifer Lopez graced the red carpet with a range of retro-inspired hairstyles. Whilst all include a curtain of glossy, bouncy side-swept waves, the curls range from tight pin curls to softer, blown-out blow dries and defined, glossed ringlets.

Last night at the British Academy of Film Awards, Elizabeth Olsen, who was nominated for the EE Bafta Rising Star Award deconstructed the look with a day-old grungier version of the style, whilst Zero Dark Thirty actress Jessica Chastain opted for full-on glamour, tonging her flame-coloured hair into a mane of  uniform shiny over-the-shoulder curls. Meanwhile at the Grammy’s over in Los Angeles model Chrissy Teigan showcased a modern version of the retro-inspired hairstyle with her highlighted chestnut hair tongued into tumbling oversized waves.

To recreate the over-the-shoulder look, start by adding a volumising mousse to freshly washed damp hair – we love Aveda’s Phomollient Styling Foam, £14 for pumped-up but not sticky locks – before blow drying smooth using a round brush. Using a fine-tooth comb, section your hair along a side-parting from the front back to the crown, and sweep hair across head. For Jessica Alba-style loose curls take a curling tong such as WAM Revolving Iron, £75 and tongue hair in one direction around the head. For more uniform, Veronica-Lake style waves, try the Enrapture Amplify Jumbo Waver, £60, clamping the hair from root to tip in even sections. Mist L’Oreal Paris Elnett Satin Sleek Perfection hairspray, £6.60 over hair to finish. Combing the underneath of the hair using a vented hairbrush will help to loosen the curls without causing them to fall out.
