NEW YORK FASHION WEEK

February 16, 2016

By Alyssa Boddicker

When people say New York Fashion Week, the first thing that springs to mind are some of the most established names in fashion. With the increase in the amount of fashion influencers and innovation, there just isn’t enough room for convention anymore. Gone are the days of making the pilgrimage to Bryant Park for shows down a straight runway; and enter an array of diverse venue spaces. And with that, a totally new and fresh approach.

Diane Von Furstenberg, Tommy Hilfiger, and Jeremy Scott have been front-runners of this change with their Fall 2016 ready-to-wear collections. These unconventional shows all brought their own unexpected flare to liven up Fashion Week followers by showing every fashionista’s dream dance party, gorgeous clothes shipping off on the runway, and quirky clothes themselves adding excitement to the runways this season.

Diane Von Furstenberg

Starting her presentation with what Diane Von Furstenberg called a “runway in motion”, all of the top models (Lily Aldridge, Gigi Hadid, Kendall Jenner, Karlie Kloss, Jourdan Dunn, Elsa Husk and more) rocked their own versions of the classic DVF wrap, be it Karlie’s metallic gold gown, to Kendall’s wrap jumpsuit. Set in their own VIP set, the evening wear of the collection made these models look red carpet ready.

In an effort to show that DVF’s clothes are made for “real girls”, this years Fashion Week presentation started 1.5 hours early when the models hosted a dance party, or as Furstenberg dubbed it a “runway in motion” complete with polaroid pictures, selfies for their Instagram’s, and all around fun times while wearing the newest ready-to-wear collection from Diane Von Furstenberg.

After the dance party, DVF’s collection was highlighted in this gorgeous showroom

Once the dance party ended, the real show began where five themes; movement, fencing, two workspaces (a traditional office and a creative workspace), and for the top models, a VIP party scene removed from the other “working girls” fashioned on the floor below. It seems that DVF really aimed for fashion to imitate reality with fashion’s elite removed from the rest of those who have to work for their clothes.

The exiting thing about this collection is that along with the collections that are due to come out in the fall, Diane Von Furstenberg also released a capsule collection which was available for sale in real time on DVF.com. In a world that’s needs are always now, now, now, the fashion industry is finally catching up, and DVF is at the front lines.

Tommy Hilfiger

Blush, gold, navy, and black are the colors of Tommy Hilfiger’s newest nautical collection

American as apple pie, Tommy Hilfiger delivered another preppy yet refined collection this year focused on a romantic nautical theme. Colors concentrated on in this collection were a cream, a faded pink/blush, navy, white, black, and gold. Puffed and cap sleeves, horizontal stripes, collars, and gold detailing were continuous trend that stuck to the at-sea theme but with enough refinement in the form of small details and muted colors that the looks were still polished and romantic.

If the gorgeous clothes weren’t enough, the biggest spectacle Tommy Hilfiger’s newest runway show was the fact that the runway was an entire boat top! Complete with steam coming out the top and seats for “passengers”, the ‘Hilfiger Line‘ set sail into one of New York Fashion Week’s favorite collections.

Dawning a tiara, golden and glowy makeup, and a sparking dress catching the light wherever she walks, Gigi Hadid was truly a nautical princess this runway show, and we aren’t surprised, isn’t she already model royalty?

Coats of all types added fall flare to the runway

Seeing as this is a fall collection, jackets are a must. Navy and muted gold were the focus of outerwear this season, with textures ranging from fur to wool to silks. The wide range of styles in the jackets are also a great addition to the collection. The oversized bomber, the cape jacket, and the classic trench all dawning nautical flare are a perfect way that Tommy Hilfiger combined his collection’s theme and designer aesthetic with current trends, making everyone want these gorgeous pieces.

A wide-reaching collection from Tommy Hilfiger makes us want to come aboard.

There’s nothing we love more during Fashion Week than the behind the scenes shot of all the models bundled together. This isn’t because we want to feel bad about ourselves with so many gorgeous faces in one photo, but it’s the best way to see just how cohesive the collection is. In Tommy Hilfiger’s Fall 2016 ready-to-wear collection’s case, it was a success. The nautical romance of the collection made for a perfect balance of black and navy stripes with leather mixed with cream and blush colored silks and chiffons. Can we also note just how great this collection had to be to pull of the socks and heels look? Ship-shape doesn’t even begin to describe the beauty of this collection.

Jeremy Scott

Bright and bold jackets coated the Jeremy Scott runway

Jeremy Scott is known as the fashion designer for the people. His themed collections have always brought life to Fashion Week and this year is no different. His theme of “Cowboys and Aliens” with a 80’s twist added light and life to the New York runway. Jackets were the stars of this collection, with neon colors, cheetah and cow patterns, and a variety of out-there textures that jumped off the runway.

Even the front row was lit up with color at the Jeremy Scott Fall 2016 runway show. From bright jumpers, to floor length jackets ensembles, and even makeup and hair was bright and colorful just like the designers show.

Backstage and back to the 80’s, Jeremy Scott’s bright and bold fashions throw us back to a time of fashion experimentation with a modern twist that doesn’t leave us feeling like we just left a rave.

Cowboys and Aliens were the inspiration seen throughout Jeremy Scott’s runway show

Retro patterns, intensely bright and textured fabrics, and highly beaded ensembles brought together Jeremy Scott’s theme of Cowboys and Aliens with modern silhouettes that were the perfect balance of theme and fashion. Stand out decorated boots were also a focus of the collection, from bright Wellies to studded cowboy boots, these boots really were made for walkin’.

Neon details add even more life to Scott’s collection

Retro detailing in accessories and makeup looks, especially that bright blue eyeliner (check out this article on how to get with this trend), were the little touches that made sure the collection was cohesive and to theme without looking cheap. If aliens did end up visiting earth and having it out with cowboy’s in the 80’s, I’m sure this is the collection they would wear.
